No other way, this is the correct way to do it. The reason is that the assortments are very flexible. You can use stores and/or (parts of) organizational hierarchies, and products and/or (part of) retail category hierarchies. Both can be included or excluded. The organizational hierarchy can change over time. etc etc. What product is in which assortment(s) has to be calculated. This is done by the Process Assortments job. You could check LCS if there are any hotfixes on it. But I suggest to close all no longer in use assortments and schedule the job to run in batch.
